I hitchhiked the USA one summer when I was in college. Great experience! People were generally nice (free tours, food, beer, really went out of their way, etc). Had to be prepared for others, but very little trouble was encountered. Those days are gone. Not many hitchers on the road or people that will pick them up. I live in a rough city (Baltimore) on the east coast. Really enjoyed the trip.
